We’ve all heard about the benefits of Greek yogurt recently. It’s a great source of protein and calcium, great for bone health, and can be filled with live cultures and probiotics. But what about its counterpart? What happened to just buying and eating regular yogurt?
I was asking myself this question at the grocery store last week when I noticed regular yogurt was on sale and Greek was not. And I was contemplating getting Greek yogurt anyway due to it being the “healthier” choice, as we always hear. So I asked myself, “Is paying the extra money for Greek yogurt really worth the added benefits?”
My conclusion: Regular and Greek yogurt are both great choices. The yogurt itself is made the same way. The biggest difference is that liquid is strained from Greek yogurt, reducing the total volume and creating a thicker consistency. This does shift the nutritional profile between the two, particularly in sugar (Greek yogurt has less), protein (Greek yogurt has more), and carbs (Greek yogurt has less).
My advice: Unless you have goals in your diet that are specific to reducing sugar, eating a low-carb diet, etc. both are great options if you want to eat yogurt. If sugar is your biggest concern, you can also opt to go for more plain yogurt options versus all of the yogurt options with added sugar that are available in both regular and Greek yogurt.
Did you know the difference between the two before reading this post? Which yogurt do you prefer?
