There are so many stages to potty training. The reality is potty training is a marathon, not a sprint. If you show up consistently each day with your child and follow their lead, they’re going to pick it up. It may not look exactly like how you planned at the beginning, but they’ll get to the finish line eventually!
Elson has been potty trained for 4 months! We used a small potty on the floor in his room so that he could go independently as needed. Of course, this meant we had to clean a little potty every day but we didn’t mind that in exchange for not having to accompany him to the potty multiple times a day.
Now, 4 months later, he’s asking to use the big potty almost exclusively. I was surprised at the sudden shift, but it’s perfect because he is now tall enough to use it on his own. Our big potty setup: we have a magnetic seat attached to the lid that he pulls down and can sit on without falling in. He uses the same stool he uses to brush his teeth and wash his hands now for the potty. He can collapse and open this one on his own so it’s out of the way when he’s not using it.
The only thing I can think of that may have contributed to the shift is that we have been able to get out of the house more now that Shay is older. He has had to use more big potties in public and sees me using them more often too. Kids are always eager to imitate us.
Who’s in the middle of potty training? How’s it going??
