My husband asked me a question the day other: “Are green beans the same thing as string beans?” I didn’t have the answer right away but, of course, I had to look it up! We eat green beans all of the time, but I haven’t heard someone use the term string bean in a while… Turns out there is a reason for that!
Green beans and string beans are essentially the same thing. They are both green beans but not all string beans are green beans. Make sense? Back in the day, these beans use to have a string that ran through them which would have to be removed before cooking. Eventually (thank goodness), it was discovered that these beans could be grown without the string and now you and I don’t have to worry about it when we buy our green beans at the store. So, the term “string bean” has mostly fizzled out and “green bean” is in.
What do you call your beans? String or green?
