As soon as I stopped and asked myself this question, I already knew the answer was no. But, I don’t know about you, I have always been taught to just rinse an apple under water to “wash” it. Of course, that is only going to do so much. It will likely rinse away dirt and some bacteria, but if you really want to wash your apples simply add a baking soda bath to your wash routine.
The recommended soak time for your apples in a baking soda bath is 15 minutes but, if you’re short on time maybe because you have a toddler begging for you an apple immediately, at least a 2-minute bath will significantly improve how much dirt, bacteria, and pesticides you are able to remove from your fruit before consuming it.
My son absolutely loves eating whole apples almost daily so I’m excited to add this to my wash routine to make sure I’m cleaning them as best as I can! The only bummer with this approach is it is not recommended you wash your apples until you are ready to eat them which I don’t typically prefer. I really like having my fruit washed and ready to eat straight from the fridge, if possible, so I might test it out on a few apples to see how quickly washing in advance speeds up the decaying process. Will report back if I end up trying this!
Have you heard of soaking your apples in baking soda before? If you’ve tried it, I would love to hear how this has worked out for you!
