Have you heard of the fetal ejection reflex? I personally experienced before during the birth of my second child before I knew it had a name. The fetal ejection reflex is a normal part of the natural, uninterrupted birthing process. It’s your body’s natural response to baby engaging in the pelvis in preparation for delivery. It’s a unique sensation that feels like the body is pushing on your behalf. Listen, if you get to experience this, know that your body is telling you something: it’s finally time to push that baby out!
To compare it to something you have likely experienced, think of your body’s natural response to vomiting. If you ate some bad food, your body is going to find a way to get rid of it. Sometimes this requires the food to come back up the way it came in, whether you like it or not. The fetal ejection reflex is similar. Your body knows what to do. It was built to birth. So, ready or not, your body is going to find a way to push the baby out. Now, of course, you’re going to have to do some work to get baby all the way across the finish line (if only it spontaneously did all of the work for you, right?). But how cool is it that your body has a way of communicating to you that it’s time to push through the fetal ejection reflex?
Have you experienced this reflex before? How was it for you?
