Collagen powder: Can you really put it in your coffee?

You may have been hearing about collagen lately and the recommendation to add it to your morning cup of coffee. It’s a tasteless powder packed with many benefits so it’s unlikely to ruin the taste of your coffee. But there’s some debate around whether or not you should actually be mixing this powder into any hot beverage. Adding collagen to a liquid that is around or above 140 Fahrenheit can potentially have diminishing or even negative effects on collagen’s nutrients. So if you like your coffee piping hot (let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), you might want to reconsider how you digest your collagen powder.

First things first, collagen is something our bodies produce naturally so adding it to your diet isn’t necessarily for everyone. However, as we age our body produces less and less on its own. Some people have found adding it to their diet has helped them combat visible signs of aging of the skin, strengthened their hair and nails, and provided many other joint and muscular health benefits. If you decide to explore adding collagen peptides to your diet, you might want to consider the ongoing debate about adding it to your hot beverage.

Based on my own research, I wasn’t able to confidently find a resolute answer to this question. For every site I found that said it was okay to add collagen powder to a hot beverage, there was another providing data that showed it wasn’t. My recommendation? Don’t risk it and skip adding it to the hot beverage. There are plenty of other ways to add it into a cold substance such as a smoothie or a bowl of yogurt. This way you know for sure you are getting all of the nutrients; there’s no debate about it!
